Inscription: In rear of this stone stood the homestead of Asher Wright 1754 - 1844 soldier in the war of the American Revolution boyhood friend and camp attendant of Captain Nathan Hale. He served as a private in Hale's company Colonel Charles Webb's regiment and was engaged in the battles of White Plains and Trenton. After Hale's death "Poor Asher" returned here and lived on for sixty eight beclouded years never ceasing to mourn for Hale and presumably the last actor to make his exit from the stage of the Hale drama. "O, call back yesterday, bid time return." Erected AD 1937 by George Dudley Seymour. |
